Cada vez que veo Washington DC en el telediario, en una noticia o en una película, me hace ilusión porque me recuerda a casa. Y eso que sólo pasé allí viviendo un año, pero no sé por qué esa ciudad que antes de pisar me parecía como muy institucional, fría y poco atractiva, ahora me hace tener otro tipo de sentimientos mucho más cercanos. No sé si te acordarás que te conté la primera parte de nuestra Navidad en Washington DC hace un tiempo, y hoy retomo con algunas cosas más que visitar en la ciudad.
Como sabes, es la capital de Estados Unidos y la ciudad donde está concentrado el mayor número de personas que trabajan para el Gobierno americano. Fue nombrada así en honor a George Washington, el primer presidente de Estados Unidos y el Distrito de Columbia hace referencia al descubridor de América, Cristóbal Colón. Es una ciudad con muchos puntos culturales para visitar y con mucha vida.
Every time I see Washington DC on the news, in a newspaper or a movie, I'm excited because it reminds me home. I only spent one year living there, but I don't know why the city that I thought before visiting it was going to be very institutional, cold and uninviting, now makes me have much closer feelings. I wrote a post about the first part of our Christmas in Washington DC a while ago, and now I return with some other things to visit in the city.
As you know, it is the capital of the United States and the city where the largest number of people working for the US Government is concentrated. It was named in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States and the District of Columbia refers to the discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. It is a city with many cultural places to visit and full of life.
National Mall

El National Mall es un parque nacional consistente en gran explanada al aire libre rodeada de los museos, memoriales y monumentos nacionales. Se extiende desde el Capitolio hasta el Monumento a Washington. Es una zona muy bonita para dar un paseo el ir visitando de paso los puntos más turísticos de la ciudad. Aquí se celebran los fuegos artificiales nacionales el 4 de Julio, así como cine al aire libre en verano, manifestaciones, festivales en primavera, etcétera.
The National Mall is a National Park surrounded by museums, memorials and National monuments. It goes from the Capitol to the Washington Monument. It is a lovely area to go for a walk and visit at the same time the main turistic points of the city. Here takes place the National fireworks on July 4th, an outdoor cinema in summer and also National demonstrations or festivals in spring.

White House

Estoy segura de que conoces la Casa Blanca y es probable que sea una tus visitas obligadas en Washington. Como sabes, es la residencia oficial y el lugar de trabajo del Presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama. No está abierta al público para poder visitarla por dentro a no ser de que sea con autorización expresa de un congresista y pidiendo la cita con una antelación considerable. Aún así, puedes informarte por si acaso o si no, puedes hacer el tour virtual que ofrece su página oficial. Cuando viví allí tuve la suerte de poder visitarla por dentro, y escribiré un post con fotos sobre la visita para que puedas verla. Por supuesto, sólo tuvimos acceso a una pequeñísima parte, ya que cuenta con seis plantas y con una extensión total de 5.100 metros cuadrados.
I'm sure you know the White House and it is one of your must visits in Washington. As you know, it is the official residence and workplace of the US President, Barack Obama. It is not usually open to the public unless it is expressly authorized by a congressman and also requesting the appointment in advance. Still, you can try to get some information about it or you can make the virtual tour that offers its official website. When I lived there I had a chance to get in so I will write a post with pictures of our visit so you can see the inside. Of course, we only had access to a small part of it.

Memorials

Washington DC cuenta con un gran número de memoriales de los que te recomiendo ver todos a ser posible porque merece la pena. Destacan: el monumento a Washington con forma de obelisco, el Memorial de Lincoln en mármol, monumentos a Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr, el memorial de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Guerra de Corea y los Veteranos de Vietnam.
Washington DC has numerous memorials which I recommend you to see all, if possible. It's worthy to admire the Washington Monument obelisk, Lincoln Memorial, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Veterans.
Georgetown
O Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20057
Georgetown es un barrio de Washington con mucha vida y muy bonito. En él se encuentra también la famosa Universidad Georgetown, donde estudió el Rey Felipe VI, entre otros. Te recomiendo recorrer sus calles y comercios, comer por los alrededores y darte una vuelta por el Harbor, que está al lado.
Georgetown os a Washingtonian neighborhood very very pretty. The famous Georgetown University, is here, where King Philip VI of Spain studied, among other important personalities. I recommend you to walk in their streets and to go into the shops, have lunch around and visit the Harbor, which is close to it.
National Air and Space Museum

La ciudad cuenta con una gran congregación de museos nacionales y gratuitos, los Smithsonian. Por supuesto, te recomiendo visitarlos, pero me parecía interesante destacar el Museo Nacional del Aire y del Espacio. Es un lugar impresionante que seguro, te deja con la boca abierta.
The city has a large congregation of National free museums, the Smithsonian. Of course, I recommend you visit them, but it is interesting for you to visit the National Museum of Air and Space. It is impressive and it will leave you with your mouth open for sure.

Metro
El metro de Washington DC no funciona las 24h del día como en otras ciudades, aun siendo el segundo metro con más pasajeros de todo el país, después del de Nueva York, pero no por ello es menos eficiente y está infinitamente más cuidado y limpio que el de la Gran Manzana. Es bastante fácil e intiutivo y sale rentable utilizarlo, además de que comunica con estados colindantes como Virginia o Maryland. Cuenta con un total de seis líneas y los lugares principales para visitar están relativamente cerca unos de otros.
Hay bonos de 1 día por 14,50$ y de 7 días por 36$ o 59,25$ en función del viaje y también dispone de la tarjeta SmarTrip® card que puedes comprar e ir recargando según la utilizas. Los viajes salen más baratos si no vas a usar el metro o el bus muchísimo como para que salga a cuenta comprar un bono y cualquiera de ellas puedes comprarla por internet previamente.
Los horarios son de lunes a jueves de 05:00 am a 12 am; viernes de 5:00 am a 03:00 am; sábados de 7:00 am a 3 am y domingos de 7:00 am a 24:00 am.

The Washington DC Metro does not work 24h as in other cities, although it is the second one with more passengers across the country, after New York. But no less efficient and very much more care and clean than the Big Apple. It is quite easy to use, besides it communicates with neighbour states like Virginia or Maryland. It has a total of six lines and the main places to visit are relatively close to each other.
It has passes for $ 14.50 one day and 7 days for $ 36 or $ 59.25 depending on the trip. Also you can buy a SmarTrip® card that you can go charging when you need so your trips will be cheaper.
The hours its open are Monday through Thursday from 05:00 am to 12 am; Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. and Sunday from 7:00 am to 24:00 am.
Autobús
La red de transporte urbano en autobús funciona también bien, aunque no los tiempos de espera son bastante altos. Puedes utilizar la SmarTrip® card para pagar los viajes y los horarios varían en función del condado o distrito en que lo utilices, por eso es mejor mirar los del sitio que te interese.
The network of urban bus transportation also works well, although waiting times are quite high. You can use the SmarTrip® card to pay for your ride and schedules may vary by county or district.

Taxi
Si te apetece moverte más rápido porque no tienes tiempo o porque el taxi te parece más cómodo, también está la opción. Los taxis en Washington DC no utilizan el medidor de kilómetros, sino un sistema de tarifas por zonas. No es carísimo pero sí es la opción menos económica de las tres. Yellow cab DC es una de las compañías que funciona en DC.
If you want to move faster because you have no time or because you like more comfortable rides, you also have this option. Taxis in Washington DC work by tariff zones, so it's not expensive but it is the most expensive option of the three I show you.

Hay muchos de restaurantes en Washington DC que merecen la pena, así como de cadenas de comida rápida que se extienden por todo el país, tengo un post preparado sobre las mejores. Como viví allí durante mucho tiempo y no me decido, os recomiendo sólo dos para una estancia cortita y si quieres, tú me puedes dejar alguna otra sugerencia en los comentarios!
There are thousands of restaurants in Washington DC worthwhile as well as fast food chains that extend throughout the country. As I lived there for a long time and I hesitate, I recommend you only two for a short stay and if you want, you can leave me any other suggestions in the comments!

Es el famoso restaurante del español José Andrés. Si os pica la curiosidad por comer o cenar allí, merece la pena la experiencia si vives en Estados Unidos. Tienen un menú bastante amplio de comida española y tapas. El servicio es muy bueno y el precio relativamente bueno para un restaurante de estas características. Si vais sólo de turismo desde España, en mi opinión no merece la pena.
It is the famous Spanish Restaurant of José Andrés. If you are curious you can have lunch or dinner there, it is worthy if you live in the United States. They have a pretty extensive menu of Spanish food and tapas. The service and the price are good for a restaurant of this kind. If you are from Spain and you go to visit DC just for a few, in my opinion it is not worthy.

Es un restaurante con comida tejana que os acercará al estado del country un poquito. Tiene música en directo y muy buen ambiente. Se come muy bien y hay variedad de platos, como te puedes imaginar no falta la carne a la brasa, mazorcas de maíz, salchichas o una amplia variedad de acompañamientos. Además, tienen una larga carta de cervezas.
It is a Texan restaurant that will approach you to the Country State. It has live music and great atmosphere to have lunch or dinner. You will eat very well and they have a variety of dishes, as you can imagine no lack of grilled meat, corn cobs, sausages or a wide variety of dish sides. They also have a long list of beers.

It is the typical young American bar where you can have a beer, play board games, pool, enjoy the happy hour, watch a soccer game or dance in a Saturday night. It has two floors and an outdoor terrace where you can sit and enjoy the people walking through the streets of Washington.

Se trata del bar de un hotel, el Baron Hotel, donde podrás comer, cenar o tomarte algo, especialmente si te gusta la cerveza. Es el típico bar con un billar al fondo, una larga barra y una inmensa cantidad de tipos de cerveza de todo el mundo ¡Más de 600! Tiene una decoración curiosa entre la que destaca una pared hecha con chapas de cerveza.
This is the bar of a hotel, the Baron Hotel, where you can have lunch, dinner or a drink, especially if you like beer. It is the typical bar with a pool, a really long bar to order your drink and a vast amount of beers from around the world, more than 600! It has a curious decoration and the part that I like the most is a wall made of beer caps.

De los días que estuvo Carlos conmigo en Washington, algunos los pasamos en casa con la familia y otros nos fuimos a un hotel para poder hacer turismo y estar más tranquilos. Elegimos este y lo recomiendo porque tuvimos buena estancia y el precio es muy bueno para estar en el centro de Washington y ser Navidad. No sé por cuánto estará ahora, pero alrededor de 50$ la noche fue lo que pagamos nosotros. Normalmente reservamos hostales, pero cogimos la oferta y nos salió rentable.
When Carlos was with me in Washington, we slept some days at my hostfamily house and others we went to a hotel. We chose this and I recommend it because we had good stay and the price is very good for being in downtown Washington and Christmas. I don't know how much is it now, but about $ 50 per night was what we pay.
