THE EDINBURGH CHRONICLES - PART 1
(ESPAÑOL TRAS EL SALTO)Eighteen years ago I visited Edinburgh for the last time. It was May 1992 and I spent two sunny and warm days in the city. It was not as expected, due to the bad reputation of Scottish weather, but it sort of changed my mind about it -"it is not as bad as they say..."
Eighteen years from then, the city has welcomed me with the sort of weather I was expecting on my first visit: clouds, wind and rain. Not many clouds, more breeze than wind and just a few though persistent drops of rain, but enough to cause an impact on a body coming from the 94 degrees on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
The journey to Scotland was a nightmare. The delays on our train to Barcelona and then on the flight to Scotland turned what should have been a placid seven-hour journey into an eleven-hour ordeal. Midnight at Edinburgh airport is not the place to queue for a taxi unless you want to stand up for hours in the open air, so we decided to take an express bus to the centre and walk to our flat. The tiring day, the weather change and a backache caused by the carrying of the luggage brought about a tremendous reaction on my body and so I had to spend half Sunday in bed to recover.

The weather wasn't helping but this Belle and Sebastian's tune kept playing in my head as if my heart and soul were longing for a change in the atmospheric situation that would help me pull through. Monday hasn't been that good, but I'm sure that eventually the happy mood from the song will spread over the weeks ahead.

I wanted to start these chronicles with the best Scottish band ever, according to a three-month-long poll done by Scottish magazine The List. There are other Scottish bands I like nearly as much as Belle and Sebastian but as the people from Scotland have clearly stated their likes about it, I won't be the one to state a different thing. So here's the first post on my diary, which intends to be a collection of feelings, experiences and tunes all mixed up while spending summer in this charming city.

Hace dieciocho años visité Edimburgo por última vez. Era mayo de 1992 cuando pasé dos cálidos y soleados días en la ciudad. Debido a la mala reputación del clima escocés, no era lo esperado, por eso cambió mi idea sobre él - "no era tan malo como decían..."
Dieciocho años después, la ciudad me ha saludado con el tipo de clima que había esperado en mi primera visita: nubes, viento y lluvia. No muchas nubes, más brisa que viento y solo un poco de lluvia, aunque persistente, suficiente para causar tremendo impacto en un cuerpo acostumbrado a los 34 grados de la costa mediterránea.
El viaje a Escocia fue una pesadilla. Los retrasos en trenes y aviones transformaron lo que debía haber sido un "plácido" desplazamiento de siete horas en un calvario de casi más de doce. Luego, a medianoche, la perspectiva de conseguir un taxi que nos sacara del aeropuerto no era muy halagüeña, a juzgar por la escasez de los mismos y la enorme cola de pasajeros que se hizo en un momento. Así que tomamos el primer autobús al centro y terminamos andando hasta nuestro apartamento. La fatiga, el cambio meteorológico y un tremendo dolor de espalda causado por el trajín de arrastrar las maletas aquí y allá me provocó tal reacción que tuve que pasar medio domingo metido en la cama para recuperarme.
El clima no ayudaba a a mi recuperación, pero la melodía de esta canción de Belle and Sebastian resonaba en mi cabeza constantemente, como si mi cuerpo y mi alma ansiaran también ese cambio atmosférico que nos ayudara a recomponer nuestros  "chacras". El lunes no ha sido mucho mejor, pero estoy seguro de que, al final, el tono feliz de la canción se extenderá sobre las semanas que están por venir. 
Quería comenzar estas crónicas con la mejor banda escocesa de todos los tiempos, según una encuesta de tres meses de duración realizada por la revista The List. Hay bandas de este país que me gustan tanto o más que Belle and Sebastian, pero si los escoceses ya han dado su opinión al respecto, no seré yo quien diga lo contrario. Así que, aquí esta mi primera entrada de mi diario escocés, que pretende ser una mezcla de sentimientos, experiencias y melodías recopiladas durante este verano en esta maravillosa ciudad.
