Thanks to my blogger friend RadioDuo's comment, I have been able to beautifully link this new post with the previous one in such a way that the last artist becomes the new song title. And the fact of having a celebrity in a song title brought to mind a few other tracks which follow the same path.
Gracias al comentario de mi colega bloguero RadioDuo he podido unir maravillosamente las dos últimas entradas del blog, de manera que el último artista comentado se transforma en el título de la nueva canción. Este hecho me ha traído a la memoria otras tantas canciones que también contienen el nombre de un famoso en su título.
Human rights and arts are the fields from which these celebrities usually come from. We have Peter Gabriel's Biko to honour the South African anti-apartheid fighter's life ("...and the eyes of the world are watching now..."), Cake's Frank Sinatra, using the atmosphere of one of his songs to tell a different story ("...while Frank Sinatra sings Stormy Weather, the flies and spiders get along together...") or a photographer's life's miseries told in click-like rhythm by Manic Street Preachers in Kevin Carter ("...wasted your life in black and white...").
Los derechos humanos y las artes son los campos más apetecidos por los músicos para dedicar títulos a grandes celebridades. Por ejemplo, Peter Gabriel rinde honores a la figura del líder anti-apartheid sudafricano Biko; Frank Sinatra aparece en la canción de Cake inspirando una historia distinta a la suya, y Manic Street Preachers cuentan las miserias del fotógrafo sudafricano Kevin Carter con la misma precisión que el protagonista de su historia contaba la vida en clicks.
I believe most of these songs are a way to be grateful to the people that have made memorable contributions to the world, either worldwide recognized -Simon and Garfunkel's tribute to architect Frank Lloyd Wright (So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright: "...when I run dry, I stop a while and think of you...") or slightly underrated -Teenage Fanclub's Gene Clark, about the former leader of The Byrds: "...all the seeds you sow are looking for a place to grow...", which points out the seminal feature of his music.
Creo que la mayoría de estas canciones son una forma de agradecer a las personas que han hecho una contribución especialmente valiosa al mundo, ya sea desde el reconocimiento mundial (So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright, de Simon and Garfunkel, en homenaje al famoso arquitecto norteamericano) o desde el talento infravalorado (Gene Clark, de Teenage Fanclub, reivindica la genialidad y el carácter seminal del trabajo del líder de The Byrds)

The same seminal attribute is granted to Brian Eno's work in MGMT's song. The band chooses an outsider, a self-considered no-musician, an avantgarde creator of new tendencies, an experimenter, to place him on top of their list of influences ("...he taught me many things..."). What is really original in MGMT's song is they present the artist as a sorcerer and the music displayed evokes The Phantom of the Opera's organ, pulling out from our brains the image of a mad scientist trying out new potions ("I followed the sounds to a cathedral. Imagine my surprise to find that they were produced by Brian Eno..." , "...When I was stuck he'd make me memorize elaborate curses. Tinctures and formulas to ditch the chori and flip the verses..."). After this song, I honestly couldn't think of a better tribute for myself, if I ever deserve one. It happens that, for the time being... I haven't got the whole world behind me.
El mismo rasgo seminal está presente en el reconocimiento del trabajo de Brian Eno en la canción de MGMT. La banda ha escogido a un outsider, a un autonombrado no-músico, a un creador de vanguardia y nuevas tendencias, a un experimentador, para situarlo en lo más alto de su lista de influencias. Lo interesante es que la banda presenta a este artista como un hechicero, y envuelve la historia en un sonido sacado de El Fantasma de la Ópera, de forma que de nuestra mente brotan imágenes de un mago tocando frenéticamente un órgano en una catedral vacía o de un científico loco probando nuevas pócimas. Después de leer y escuchar la canción, no podría desear mejor homenaje para mí mismo, si algún día lo merezco, porque ocurre que yo no voy por delante del mundo, por ahora...
