Entrevista a Sarah MacLean (Love by numbers)

Sarah MacLean creció en Rhode Island, obsesionada con los romances históricos y lamentando haber nacido demasiado tarde para disfrutar su propia temporada.
La inclinación que siempre tuvo por la historia la llevó a graduarse en Smith College y en la Universidad de Harvard antes de que finalmente decidiera coger la pluma y escribir su primer libro.

1. What made a modern woman from Brooklyn to write about Regency London?¿Qué fue lo que hizo que una mujer moderna, actual, de Brooklyn, decidiera ambientar sus obras en el Londres de la Regencia?
I’ve always been drawn to history—the mystery of it, the romance of it, the lessons we can all learn from it. My mother is British, my father Italian, and they raised me to have a deep appreciation of the worlds and times that came before me...and before here. So I suppose it was expected that when I finally wrote a book, I would write something historical. Why the Regency? I love playing with the edges of society—the places where the rules might be broken, where things are not what they seem. The Regency has such firm rules, that it’s particularly fun to write characters who test them.
Siempre me ha atraído la historia: su misterio, su romance, lo que podemos aprender de ella. Mi madre es británica y mi padre es italiano y ambos me educaron para que sintiera un profundo respeto por los mundos y las épocas anteriores a mí... y aquí. Así que supongo que cuando finalmente me decidí a escribir un libro, tenía que ser algo histórico. ¿Por qué la Regencia? Porque me encanta jugar con los límites de la sociedad: con las normas que podían romperse, donde las cosas no son como parecen. La Regencia tenía unas reglas tan estrictas, que resulta divertido escribir sobre personajes que las ponen a prueba.
2. Do you have any mania or superstition when you start writing?¿Tienes alguna manía o superstición a la hora de ponerte a escribir?
When I start a book, I’m always terrified that I’ll get 50 pages in and realize that I’m writing the wrong book. Or that my hero and heroine aren’t really right for each other. Or that I’ll get 200 pages in, and realize that I have to start over. So I don’t really relax into the story until page 200. Because of that, the beginnings are always harder than the ends for me. Now, I’ve probably cursed myself, though. And the next book will fall apart at page 300!
Cuando empiezo a escribir un libro, siempre tengo el mismo miedo de que cuando llegue a la página 50, me dé cuenta de que he escrito el libro equivocado. O que mi héroe y heroína no están hechos el uno para el otro. O que cuando lleve 200 páginas, me dé cuenta de que tengo que empezar de nuevo. Así que no suelo relajarme hasta la página 200, por eso los comienzos me resultan tan difíciles como los finales. Ahora puede que me haya maldecido a mí misma y ¡que el libro decaiga en la página 300!
3. The first question about Love by Numbers that I have to make, although I am aware you have been asked before is will there be a book in which Benedick finds love?La primera pregunta obligada sobre la saga Love by numbers, aunque sé que ya te la han hecho en alguna ocasión, es, ¿habrá un libro en el que Benedick encuentre el amor?
When I start a book, I have no idea which secondary characters will appear, or how important they will become. And in the case of people like Callie’s brother Benedick in Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake, I really have no idea of who readers will love.But what I can tell you is that it’s not as easy as sitting down and saying, “Today, I’m going to write Benedick’s story.” Sometimes, Benedick’s heroine doesn’t show up when I’d like her to. What I can tell you is that these characters are just as real to me as they are to you, and I’d like to see them all have their happily-ever-after.
Cuando empiezo un libro nunca sé qué personajes secundarios van a aparecer o qué importancia van a tener y en el caso de Benedick, el hermano de Callie en Nueve Reglas que Romper para Conquistar a un Granuja, no tenía ni idea de qué personajes les iban a gustar a los lectores.Pero lo que sí puedo decirte es que no es tan fácil como sentarse y decir: Hoy voy a escribir la historia de Benedick. A veces la heroína de Benedick no aparece cuando me gustaría. Lo único que puedo decirte es que estos personajes son tan reales para mí como lo son para ti y que me gustaría que todos tuvieran sus finales de felices-para-siempre.
4. Both in 9 Rules and 10 Lessons the main characters are men, the twins, but women rule, why is that?Tanto 9 Reglas… como 10 razones… Los protagonistas son los hombres, los gemelos, en cambio son las mujeres las que llevan las riendas. ¿A qué se debe?
Isn’t that the way real life is (or at least, how real life should be?) ;)
¿No es así también en la vida real (o, por lo menos como debería ser)? ;)
5. Do you draw your characters completely out of your imagination or are they based upon people you know?¿Tus personajes surgen completamente de tu imaginación o basas sus rasgos, carácter… en personas que conoces?
It’s impossible to write an entire novel without drawing on the people you know, places you’ve been, and experiences you’ve had, so...yes, most of my characters have a qualities derived from people in my life. But it should be said that those qualities are often combined or distilled in a kind of chemistry experiment that produces a hero or heroine, his mother, her sister, or otherwise. No one in my life will open a book and discover themselves in entirety.
Es imposible escribir una novela entera sin inspirarse en la gente que conoces, los lugares en los que has estado y en tus propias experiencias, así que... sí, la mayoría de mis personajes poseen cualidades de la gente de mi entorno. Pero debo decir que esas cualidades suelen combinarse o destilarse en una suerte de experimento químico que produce un héroe o heroína, su madre, su hermana o lo que sea. Nadie de mi familia abrirá uno de mis libros y se verá reflejado por completo.
6. As a reader do you like reading novels published in other countries? Do you know any Spanish author?Cómo lectora, ¿te aventuras en novelas publicadas en otros países? ¿Conoces a algún/a autor/a español/a?
I confess that I’m not as aware of modern international authors as I’d like to be, in part because it’s so rare that international texts are well-translated into English. I do adore Jun'ichiro Tanizaki’s The Key, and, like many who write romance, I draw inspiration from Latin American love poems and stories from Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Pablo Neruda – but I’d love to read more present-day authors from around the world.
Confieso que no estoy tan al día de autores modernos internacionales como me gustaría, en parte porque suele ser bastante raro encontrar textos internacionales bien traducidos al inglés. Me encanta The Key de Jun'ichiro Tanizaki y, como muchos otros que escribimos romance, nos inspiramos en poemas de amor latinoamericanos y en las historias de Gabriel García Márquez y Pablo Neruda. Pero me encantaría leer a autores modernos de todo el mundo.
7. What would be your advice to a debut novelist?¿Qué consejo le darías a un autor novel?
Writing is hard. And it can be lonely. And sometimes it does not come easily. But write one word at a time, consider every paragraph a win and every page a gift. Some days you will write a sentence. Others, twenty pages. Both days are worth it.
Escribir es duro y puede ser solitario, y a veces no sale. Pero hay que escribir palabra a palabra, considerar cada párrafo un logro y cada página un regalo. Algunos días solo escribirás una frase, otros, veinte páginas. Pero todos los días valen la pena.
8. How long does it take you to write a novel? ¿Cuánto tardas aproximadamente en escribir una novela?
From conception to completion, about seven months.

9. If Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake was a Movie, who would you like to be Callie and Ralston?Si Nueve reglas que romper para conquistar a un granuja, fuera llevada al cine, ¿quién te gustaría que interpretara a Callie y a Ralstom?
I’m terrible at this game, I think because my characters are too real in my head, and so I can’t imagine anyone playing them but themselves, but…I put this to my readers on Facebook (www.facebook.com/sarahmaclean) and they came up with these two, of whom I wholeheartedly approve.Ralston: Henry CavillCallie: Lauren Myracle

10. Are you working on any new project?¿Tienes algún nuevo proyecto entre manos?
At the end of the month my new series——launches in the US and UK with A Rogue By Any Other Name. The series follows the four fallen aristocratic owners of London’s most notorious (and scandalous) gaming hell as they rise from the ashes of their own scandals and find love. I’m nearly finished with the second book in the series, One Good Earl Deserves A Lover.
A finales de mes lanzo mi nueva serie, The Rules of Scoundrels, en los EE.UU y en el Reino Unido con A Rogue By Any Other Name. La serie versa sobre cuatro aristócratas exiliados de la sociedad, propietarios de la casa de juegos más notable (y escandalosa) de Londres, y cómo emergen de las cenizas de sus propios escándalos y encuentran finalmente el amor. Estoy acabando el segundo de la serie: One Good Earl Deserves A Lover.
11. Will we ever read a novel by Sarah MacLean set in modern times or you would remain faithful to Regency London? ¿Veremos algún día una novela de Sarah MacLean ambientada en la época actual? ¿O serás fiel a tu Londres de la Regencia?
I’d love to write a contemporary novel someday. I’ve got some ideas cooking—hopefully they’ll be ready to be written eventually!
