Poesía y arte. Para William Blake estas disciplinas eran complementarias, por lo que siempre que pudo las fusionó. Fue de estos artistas visionarios que se adelantó al romanticismo y al simbolismo (algunos dirían que también al surrealismo, por su uso del delirio y el sueño) creando una mitología propia basada en su extraordinaria espiritualidad y un misticismo muy cercano al ámbito esotérico. Quizás por eso fue considerado un artista maldito, un excéntrico que sólo sería comprendido y apreciado años después.
Blake tuvo visiones desde la infancia: Ángeles y presencias que nadie más podía percibir y que influirían en su arte posterior. Se inició en el grabado a los 14 años y se centró en la historia y las leyendas, despreciando las modas neoclásicas de la época y el pensamiento racionalista imperante. Admiraba a Miguel Angel, un artista muy impopular en esos años, y usaba su mente (incluídos sus sueños) como lugar de inspiración. Para Blake no había nada más sublime que la imaginación, que era «inmortal, eterna e inagotable» y a ella consagró todo el arte que realizó hasta su muerte. Esto chocaría con sus contemporáneos, que todavía no estaban preparados para esa corriente pre-romántica, por lo que sería rechazado y tachado de excéntrico.

Poetry and art. For William Blake these disciplines were complementary, so whenever he could he merged them. It was from these visionary artists who advanced to romanticism and symbolism (some would say that also to surrealism, for their use of delirium and sleep) creating their own mythology based on their extraordinary spirituality and a mysticism very close to the esoteric sphere. Perhaps that is why he was considered a cursed artist, a eccentric who would only be understood and appreciated years later.
Blake had visions since childhood: Angels and presences that no one else could perceive and that would influence his later art. He began engraving at age 14 and focused on history and legends, despising the neoclassical fashions of the time and the prevailing rationalist thinking. He admired Miguel Angel, a very unpopular artist in those years, and used his mind (including his dreams) as a place of inspiration. For Blake there was nothing more sublime than imagination, which was “immortal, eternal and inexhaustible” and to her he consecrated all the art he made until his death. This would collide with his contemporaries, who were not yet prepared for that pre-romantic current, so he would be rejected and labeled as eccentric.

It springs from those opposites what religions call Good and Evil. Good is the passive element submissive to reason. Evil is the asset that springs from energy.
