Un monstruo (del latín monstrum) es un concepto muy amplio ligado a la mitología y la ficción. Se aplica a cualquier ser que presente características, por lo general negativas, ajenas al orden regular de la naturaleza. Los monstruos se describen como seres híbridos que pueden combinar elementos humanos, animales y necrológicos, así como tamaño anormal y facultades sobrenaturales.
Los monstruos de la antigüedad pertenecían al linaje de los dioses, por lo que la diferencia entre un ser divino y otro monstruoso se basaba más en su actitud con los mortales que en sus características inherentes.
El principio fue el miedo. A nosotros mismos y a nuestro entorno. En las cuevas de Altamira o de Lascaux palpita el temor reverencial hacia criaturas extrañas, la leyenda con la que revestimos al mundo que nos rodea y que es reflejo del miedo que proyectamos desde el interior del ser. Para cada uno de nuestros temores hemos ideado un monstruo. Y de ahí vienen las religiones idolátricas, los bestiarios medievales, las leyendas folclóricas…
La imaginación puede crear y dar vida en infinidad de historias a criaturas mitológicas y a nuevas especies. Tal es el caso de estas curiosas láminas que describen incluso su morfología.
