LightSail® is a citizen-funded project from The Planetary Society. We're sending a small spacecraft, propelled solely by sunlight, to Earth orbit.
In 2015, our LightSail 1 spacecraft successfully completed its test flight mission. LightSail 2 is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy on June 22, 2019, and we will attempt the first, controlled solar sail flight in Earth orbit. planetary.org/
The Planetary Society was founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman as a champion of public support of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. Wikipedia
Greetings, As you've probably heard by now, on Saturday, June The Planetary Society's LightSail 2 spacecraft is finally going to space! This is a historic moment - a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket is launching your spacecraft into orbit! As a Planetary Society volunteer, you are a part of this mission. And you can continue to support LightSail by helping to share its story in your community using tools that we've developed for you. You can spread the word about opportunities to see the launch in person, or you can organize a LightSail launch viewing party to bring your friends and family into the excitement, wherever you live.
At planetary.org/volunteer you'll be able to download presentation materials, videos, infographics, and lots of information about LightSail.
Whether in person or online, I hope you can join us in celebrating this milestone moment for The Planetary Society, LightSail, and all of you who have made this possible.
