"Somos críos y no podemos decidir". Así suena el final del tema que nos ocupa. En pleno debate social sobre la llamada "Generación NI-NI", la canción nos viene como anillo al dedo. El grupo escandinavo Lacrosse reproduce un pequeño discurso adolescente y acierta a retratar la confusión mental que a todos nos ha atenazado en ese momento de nuestras vidas. Por mi profesión, me las veo todos los días con adolescentes y he acabado por convencerme de que entre toda la sociedad hemos conseguido que los jóvenes se vean incapaces de afrontar la más mínima situación de frustración, que es como decir que no les hemos enseñado a vivir. En las sociedades desarrolladas (?), nuestros niños han crecido pensando que la vida es pura diversión y que el mundo está diseñado para hacer que ellos no sufran. Y, a partir de ahí vienen todos los problemas. Haciendo caso a Lacrosse, "Miras hacia otro lado pensando que todo desaparecerá, pero siento decirte que las cosas no son así". Toda la letra aquí.
"We are kids and we can't decide". That's the end of today's song. The Scandinavian band Lacrosse offers a small teenage speech and succeeds in portraying the mental confusion that we all have suffered at least once in our teenage lives. I deal with teenagers every day and all this world of confusion sounds familiar to me. There's strong controversy over a generation of Spanish youngsters, the so-called "Generation NI-NI" (NI-NI standing for Neither study-Nor work) who are supposed to be the reason why the society is rotten. In my view, they're nothing but victims. If they show no interest at all in the training for future careers and prefer living on their parents' income or are unable to endure frustration is because we haven't taught them to live. They've grown up thinking that life is pure joy and the world has been designed to spare them all suffering, so they're not to blame, that's the education their given. And this is the root of all problems. Quoting Lacrosse, "If you look the other way, you think all of it will disappear, but I'm sad to say that's not how it works". The whole lyrics here.
Ni que decir tiene que en mi opinión, en el problema está la solución. No la tomemos con ellos, porque ellos son sólo las víctimas. Miremos en la dirección correcta: si ellos NI estudian, NI trabajan, es porque nosotros NI fomentamos su deseo de saber, su curiosidad, NI damos valor al trabajo, sobre todo, al trabajo bien hecho (¿he leído bien que el ganador de Gran Hermano se ha llevado 350.000 euros de premio?) . ¿Seremos la civilización NI-NI? Y hasta aquí el análisis social, que esto es un blog de música (pero si no lo digo, reviento)
In my opinion, the solution is hidden behind the problem; it's a question of reversing things. If we look in the right direction, we'll realize they don't study or work because we haven't encouraged them to be curious, we haven't valued work, particularly well done jobs (is it right the winner of Big Brother gets a 300,000-pound pot?). Maybe we are the "Civilization Neither-Nor"... And this is the end of today's social analysis, 'cos this is a music blog. 
We Are Kids comienza recordando el 1901 de Phoenix, pero pronto nos trasladan a un sonido de guitarras a lo Joy Division (Disorder) dulcificado y a un espíritu bailable, desenfadado y poderoso que hemos encontrado recientemente en The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (Young Adult Friction). Es una canción contagiosa, como todo el álbum, con una letra de la que ya hemos hablado, pero que admite otras lecturas ("Necesitamos una segunda opinión y un juez"). Pues juzguen ustedes y denme una segunda opinión, que yo ya empiezo a estar cansado de escucharme a mi mismo...
We Are Kids starts off like Phoenix's 1901 but soon turns into a Joy Division (Disorder) guitar sound with a sweeter, uninhibited, powerful touch that we have recently heard in The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (Young Adult Friction). This is a catchy song (and album) with clever lyrics that admit further interpretation ("We need a second opinion and a judge"). So please, judge for yourselves and give me a second opinion, because I am already starting to get fed up with mine...

Este blog nació para dar a conocer canciones que pasaban desapercibidas en los medios de masas (aunque ha ido derivando también hacia la opinión personal sobre temas de actualidad). Si hay un ejemplo de canción que debería estar ya mismo en lo alto de las listas, We Are Kids es el mejor candidato. Hoy ya la he escuchado siete veces seguidas. Me faltan unas quince.
This blog was born with the intention of publicizing songs that were left unnoticed by the mass media (though, as you can see, it has also moved on to personal or current affairs). Certainly We Are Kids would deserve high positions in the charts (if they were done with some musical criteria). I have already listened to it seven times; there's still fifteen more to come.
