Una tradición navideña: The elf on the shelf

¡Hola! Ya que estamos en periodo navideño, hoy voy a presentarte a The elf on the shelf o el duende en el estante. Puede que te suene rarísimo o puede que ese pequeñito duende rojo ya te sea familiar. ¿Lo conoces?

Cuando pasó el Día de Acción de Gracias y comenzó el periodo navideño, en mi casa, apareció este duendecito rojo en una de las estanterías del comedor, ahí sentado, con las piernas colgando. Los niños se pusieron súper contentos al verlo y yo me sorprendí, porque nunca lo había visto, ni sabía de qué iba el tema.
Me contaron, como si de un mágico secreto se tratase y con toda su inocencia, que no podía tocarlo y que tenía que portarme muy bien, porque él viaja todas las noches al Polo Norte y le cuenta a Santa si hemos sido buenos. Si nos portábamos mal, Santa podría decidir no traernos los regalos que habíamos pedido en nuestra carta para Navidad. ¿De qué os suena? ¿Pinzón? ¿El que le contaba a los Reyes Magos cómo te habías portado y les chivaba si te habías portado regular?
When Thanksgiving Day was over and Christmas period began, in my house, this little red elf appeared on the top of one of the shelves in the dining room, sitting there with his legs dangling. The kids got super excited to see him again and I was surprised because I had never seen or knew what it was all about before.
They told me, as if it were a magic secret and with all their innocence, that we could not touch him and we had to behave very very well, because he travels every night to the North Pole to report Santa if we have been good or not. If we don't behave, Santa could decide not to bring us the gifts we had requested in our letter. Does it sound familiar for you?

Este pequeño duende hace la Navidad todavía más mágica para los niños. Cada noche, mientras todo el mundo está dormido, cambia misteriosamente de posición dentro de las casas y la primera cosa que los niños hacen por las mañanas es buscarlo para ver desde dónde les va a vigilar ese día. En algunos hogares el duende deja pistas para que los más pequeños encuentren su nueva posición, utilizando nieve artificial o purpurina mágica.
Pero no sólo eso. Sabes que los duendes son conocidos por sus bromas y trastadas, así a veces también los niños, de manera divertida, reciben bromas de su duende. Les cambia la leche de color, utiliza su pasta de dientes, les pinta un bigotillo mientras están durmiendo,... Y les escucha y escribe si están preocupados o tienen algún mal comportamiento que corregir. Pueden escribirle una carta y el duende les responderá al día siguiente alentándolos a comportarse mejor o ayudándoles a resolver su problema. ¡Incluso si tienen suerte les deja el informe que más tarde entregará a Santa!

This little elf makes Christmas even more magical for children. Every night while everyone is sleeping, he mysteriously changes his position inside the houses. And obviously, the first thing the kids do in the morning is look for him to see from where they are going to be watch that day. In some homes the elf leaves clues to be found easily, using artificial snow or magical glitter.
But not only that. You know elves are known for their tricks and treats so sometimes children receive fun pranks from them. They change milk's color, use their toothpaste, paint them a mustache on their faces while they are sleeping... They also listen and write them notes if they are concerned about something or if they have some misbehavior to correct. Children can write a note and the elf will answer them the next day encouraging them to behave better. Thus if they are lucky their elf will leave Santa's report about them!

Existen un montón de formas de colocar al duende y es divertido pensar o buscar nuevas ideas que puedan sorprender a los niños. Algunas personas hacen incluso calendarios como el que te dejo aquí debajo para planificar lo que va a hacer el duende durante el periodo navideño.
There are plenty of ways to put the elf and it's fun to think or to look for new ideas to surprise children. Some people even make calendars like the one I leave you below to plan where the elf will be or what he will do during Christmas time.
