Viajes en Estados Unidos: ¿Qué ver en Chicago?

    ¡Hola! Hoy es miércoles y toca receta, pero como leísteis la semana pasada, cambiamos los miércoles, así que os empiezo a contar detalladamente el viaje de costa a costa que hicimos este verano. Empezamos en Chicago, una ciudad muy europea, moderna y con mucho carácter que merece mucho la pena visitar. Tiene barrios muy hipster, como el que nos alojamos, mucha gente joven, vida nocturna y cultural, bares, restaurantes y muy buenas cervezas. No tuvimos tiempo de ver todo lo que nos hubiese gustado, porque el vuelo se retrasó y llegamos tarde y bastante cansados de la ruta de la semana anterior (que también os contaré próximamente).
Pero os quiero contar lo que vimos y cómo lo vimos, para que tengáis una referencia si queréis hacer un viaje similar. También me encantaría que, si habéis visitado Chicago, dejaseis en un comentario sitios que recomendaríais de vuestra visita para completar el post al máximo posible con más experiencias sobre la ciudad del viento! ¡Allá vamos!
  Hi! Today is Wednesday and I should post a recipe as I always do, but I switch it and I am gonna start showing you the trip we did this summer from coast to coast of the United States. We started in Chicago, a very modern city that I highly recommend you to visit. We did not have time enough to visit everything we would like to, because the flight was delayed and we arrived quite late and tired of the route we made the previous week (which I will also tell you soon in the blog). 

But I really want to tell you what we saw in Chicago and how we saw it, so you will have a reference if you want to do a similar trip. I would also love you to write a comment below, if you have ever visited Chicago, with places that you would recommend us to visit. So we can make together the post as much complete as possible with more experiences of the Windy City! Here we go!

Willis Tower (Sky Deck)
233 S Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60606
Es un edificio altísimo, el más alto de todo Chicago con cerca de 440 metros. Son básicamente oficinas pero la atracción está en el piso 103, el Sky Deck, un mirador donde podrás ver más allá de 50 millas y los cuatro estados colindantes y sacarte una foto en The Ledge, su plataforma de vidrio transparente con vistas verticales al suelo. Da impresión pisar un suelo de cristal, pero es posible hacerlo si no miras hacia abajo, ¡os lo digo yo que tengo miedo a las alturas!
La entrada cuesta en torno a 20$ y las vistas son espectaculares. Si vais con alguien que no se atreve a entrar, no hay problema porque en la planta de arriba hay una cafetería y una tienda de recuerdos, así que puede esperar allí. No sé cuánto es el tiempo de media en realizar la visita pero nosotros tardamos alrededor de 45 minutos. Puedes quedarte dentro disfrutando las vistas todo el tiempo que quieras.
It is the tallest building around Chicago with about 440 meters high. An office building whose attraction is on the 103rd floor, the Sky Deck, a viewpoint where you can see beyond 50 miles and four neighboring states and, of course, take a pic in The Ledge, its clear glass deck with vertical views down. It is impressive to be stepping on a glass floor, at least it was for me, but it is not impossible if you do not look down, I am telling you and I'm afraid of heights! 

Admission is about $20 and the views are spectacular. If you go with someone who does not dare to enter, do not worry, no problem because the top floor has a cafe and also a gift shop, so you can wait there. I do not know the average of time will take you the visit because it's something personal but it took us about 45 minutes. You can stay inside enjoying the views all the time you want!

Navy pier

Al salir, nos acercamos hacia el Navy Pier, pero sin llegar al final del todo donde están todas las atracciones que seguro, es recomendable ver. La zona del puerto está llena de gente haciendo deporte y turistas en bicicleta.
Upon leaving, we went to the Navy Pier,  although not to the very end where all the fair and attractions are, but I am sure it is worthy. The harbor area is full of people working out and turists riding bicycles.

Millenium Park

De ahí andamos hacia el famoso Millenium Park, un lugar donde, sin duda, la figura central y más característica de la ciudad es The Bean, la enorme escultura metalizada rodeada de turistas haciéndose fotos en su reflejo. La entrada al parque es gratuita, por cierto.
From there we walked to the famous Millenium Park, a place where is placed the central and most characteristic figure of the city: The Bean. A huge metallic sculpture surrounded by tourists taking pictures at its reflection. Admission to the park is free, by the way.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion

Es un templete de música situado dentro del parque donde se realizan las actividades de la Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, y por lo tanto, también es donde se celebra el Grant Park Music Festival, muy famoso en la ciudad.
It is a bandstand located in the park where the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and Chorus take place, and therefore, it is also where the International Grant Park Music Festival is celebrated, very famous in the city.

Cloud Gate Coloquialmente conocida como "The Bean", es una escultura en forma de alubia gigante que atrae a miles de turistas al año para sacarse fotos en su reflejo. Fue construida entre 2004 y 2006 y está compuesta por 168 placas de acero inoxidable soldadas entre sí y pulidas que le dan un aspecto impresionante.
Colloquially known as "The Bean", it is a giant bean sculpture which attracts thousands of tourists every year to take pictures at her reflection. It was built between 2004 and 2006 and it consists of 168 stainless steel plates welded together and polished to give it that stunning look.


Downtown
Pasear por el centro de la ciudad es obligatorio para ver los contrastes que ofrece el paisaje y los rascacielos y edificaciones que son la delicia de cualquier arquitecto o amante de la arquitectura. Por cierto, una de las cosillas que hicimos durante toda la ruta, además de coleccionar posavasos para hacer un cuadro que ya os enseñaré cuando acabe) fue probar la cerveza local de cada una de las ciudades que visitamos. Así que os recomiendo que si os gusta la cerveza os toméis una 312 Goose Island por Downtown.

Walking around downtown is almost required to see the contrasts of the landscape and the skyscrapers and buildings that are a probably a big delight for any architect or architecture lover. By the way, one of the little things we made during the route, apart from collecting coasters to make a collage (that I will show you when it is done) was to try the local beer from each of the cities we visited. So I recommend you if you like beer to order one called 312 Goose Island  in Downtown Chicago.  Delicious!


Buckingham Fountain
301 S Columbus Dr, Chicago, IL 60605
Está en Downtown y es una de las fuentes más grandes del mundo construida en 1927 y en honor al río Michigan e inspirada en el Palacio de Versalles. Durante el buen tiempo tiene festivales de agua y color.
It's located in Downtown and it is one of the largest fountains in the world built in 1927 in honor of the Michigan River and inspired by the Palace of Versailles. During the good weather it has water color festivals.

DuSable Bridge y el río Chicago
205 N Michigan Ave, 2660, Chicago, IL 60601
Es una maravilla de su época y el más famoso de la ciudad ya que marcó el momento en el que Chicago comenzó a expandirse por el norte. Uno de los puntos más turísticos de la ciudad que es imprescindible visitar.
It is a marvel of its time and the most famous bridge of the city because it marked the moment when Chicago began to expand itself to the North. One of the most popular tourist spots, a must visit.






Metro
El metro funciona bien en la ciudad pero me pareció un pelín lioso. Sale muy rentable sacar un bono de 1 día si vais a estar unos dos días por 10$ el día o uno de 7 días si vais a estar más de tres días por 27$. Los viajes sueltos son unos 2,50$ por trayecto. Las líneas que van a los aeropuertos funcionan las 24 horas del día (azul y roja) Las demás van variando de horario en función de la línea pero suelen cerrar antes de medianoche.
The metro service works well in the city but I found it kind of confusing sometimes. It is very profitable to get a day pass for $10 a day if you are going to be about two days, or 7 days pass for $27  if you are going to be more than three days. Single rides are $ 2.50 each. The airport lines operate 24 hours a day (blue and red). The other lines have several schedule depending on the line but they do not usually close before midnight.

Autobús
El mismo bono que sacas para el metro te sirve para viajar en el autobús. Las líneas suelen ir en línea recta, valga la redundancia, son frecuentes y las paradas están cada cincuenta metros, así que si te pasas una, puedes coger la siguiente sin problema y no muy lejos. Lo mismo si te bajas antes de hora.
You can use the same pass that you get for the train to ride the bus. The lines are usually straight, frequent and there are stops every 160 feet, so if you miss your stop by mistake, you can catch the next bus without problem and not far away from the other bus stop. It is the same if you get off early.

Es el lugar tradicional para desayunar el día que se inicia la Ruta 66. Funciona desde 1923 y es un típico dinner americano. Huevos revueltos, bacon, hash browns, café, zumo, pancakes,... La carta es inmensa y el precio asequible así que merece la pena visitarlo aunque no se haga la ruta. Nosotros fuimos a redesayunar después de recoger al que sería nuestro compañero de ruta, un monovolumen Dodge blanco. Al terminar, pusimos rumbo a Saint Louis, Missouri.

It is the traditional place for breakfast the day you start the Route 66. It is a typical American dinner open since 1923. Scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, coffee, juice or pancakes are included in the affordable menu. We went to have breakfast again after picking who would be our traveling buddy, a white Dodge minivan. When we finished, we headed to Saint Louis, Missouri.

Lillie's Q

Después de una gran pateada, volvimos a la zona del hostal para comer. Y como somos unos indecisos recorridos tooda una calle llena de sitios para comer pero al final entramos en el último que había unos cuantos metros más allá del barullo. ¡Y acertamos! El local es chulísimo y la comida está muy buena. Buena presentación de los platos, personal agradable, precio asequible y buena cerveza, servida, por cierto, en los botes de conserva americanos que tanto me gustan! ¡Qué más podíamos a pedir! Os recomiendo entrar a comer o cenar y pedir unas costillas o un Pulled pork sandwich, que es un bocadillo muy típico americano y aquí lo hacen buenísimo!
After a great kicked around the city, we returned to the hostel area to eat. And since we were undecided about where should we have lunch, we went through a long street full of places to eat but finally we went into the last place few yards away from the hubbub. And we hit! The place is very cool and the food is very good. Good presentation of the dishes, friendly staff, reasonable price and good beer, served, by the way, in the Americans mason jars that I love! What more could we ask for?! I recommend you to go for lunch or dinner and order some ribs and a Pulled pork sandwich, which is a very typical American meal and they do great here!

Urban Holiday Lofts

El alojamiento en las ciudades grandes siempre es más caro. Nosotros elegimos este pequeño hostal situado al lado del Wicker Park y a unos 20 minutos en metro de Downtown (Damen, línea azul). Está rodeado de tiendas, restaurantes y bares y es zona de marcha por las noches durante el fin de semana. Tiene recepción 24 horas, wifi gratis y desayuno incluido (bagels, tostadas, café, cereales, leche, mantequilla, mermelada, ...) El edificio es un antiguo apartamento de varios pisos con escaleras empinadísimas, techos altos (mis favoritos), ladrillo caravista y vigas y suelo de madera. Un ambiente modernete para pasar unos días por la ciudad a un precio asequible (desde unos 30$ por persona en habitación compartida).
Accommodation in big cities is always more expensive. We chose this small hostel located next to the Wicker Park and about 20 minutes from Downtown metro station (Damen, blue line). It is surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars in a really active nightlife district. It has 24 hours reception, free wifi and breakfast included (bagels, toast, coffee, cereal, milk, butter, jam). The building is a former multi-storey apartment with very steep stairs, high ceilings (my favorite), brick facing beams and wooden floors. A modern environment to spend a few days in the city with an affordable price (from $30 per person in a shared room).
